MAC - AppleTalk, AppleShare Troubleshooting

File sharing doesn't work

If this happens:

You can’t turn on file sharing on your computer.

What's wrong:

AppleTalk may not be turned on, or you may not have identified your computer to the network.

What to do:

  • Use the Chooser to turn on AppleTalk.
  • Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu, open the Sharing Setup control panel, and type your owner name, password, and a name for your Macintosh in the text boxes in the control panel.

You have trouble printing

If this happens:

You try to print a document, and it does not print, but you do not see an error message.

What's wrong:

The Print command isn't reaching the printer or the printer isn't working properly.

What to do:

  • Check that the printer is turned on and ready.
  • Check the cable connections to the printer.
  • If your printer has a Select light, make sure it is on.
  • Check that the printer is selected in the Chooser. If the printer is a LaserWriter, make sure that the printer and it's name are selected in the Chooser.
  • If you do not see the name of the printer you want to use in the upper-right panel of the Chooser, check to see that you have selected the correct zone in the lower-left panel of the Chooser (if your network has zones).
  • If the Chooser does not display an icon for the type of printer you want to use, place the driver or drivers for that printer in the Extensions folder (in the System Folder of your startup disk) and restart the Macintosh.

If this happens:

You try to print a document, and you see an error message.

What's wrong:

The printer has received conflicting or incorrect signals.

What to do:

  • Make sure that everyone on the network is using the same version of the printer driver . (You can use the System 7 printer drivers with earlier versions of system software.)
  • If your printer has a Select light, make sure it is on.
  • Turn off the printer for at least 10 seconds, then turn it on, wait for it to warm up, and try to print again.

You can't access a computer on the network

If this happens:

In the Chooser, you can’t find the name of the computer to which you want to connect over a network.

What's wrong:

You havent clicked the AppleShare icon in the upper-left panel of the Chooser window, or you’ve selected the wrong AppleTalk zone , or the computer to which you want to connect is not currently available.

What to do:

  • Make sure you’ve clicked the AppleShare icon in the Chooser.
  • Make sure you’ve selected the correct AppleTalk zone, if your network has zones.
  • If you see the names of other computers in the Chooser, but not the one to which you want to connect, contact the owner of that computer or your network administrator to make sure the computer is turned on and connected to the network and is available on the network for file sharing.

If this happens:

You can’t connect to a computer on a network as a registered user.

What's wrong:

You may be using the wrong user name or password, you may not be listed as a registered user on that computer, or the computer may not currently allow users to connect.

What to do:

  • Make sure you’ve correctly typed the user name and password you ordinarily use when connecting to that computer.
  • Contact the owner of the computer to find out whether it is available and whether you are listed as a registered user on that computer.

If this happens:

You can’t connect to a computer on a network as a guest.

What's wrong:

The computer may not allow guest access.

What to do:

Contact the owner of the computer to find out whether guests are allowed to connect.

If this happens:

You can connect to a computer on a network, but you can’t open the folder or disk you need.

What's wrong:

That folder or disk may not be available, or you do not have access privileges to that disk or folder.

What to do:

Contact the owner of the computer to find out whether the folder or volume you need is available for network access, and whether you have access privileges to the folder or volume.
