HAL Files

DEC names HAL files with an eight-character prefix and a “dll” suffix. The prefix indicates the file is a HAL, whether it is intended for an EV4 or EV5 processor, and whether it supports uni or multi processors. For example:

halgammp.dll is the hal file for gamma (EV5) multi-processor configuration.
halsabup.dll is the hal file for sable (EV4) uni-processor configuration.

Since HAL files for multi-processor configuration can be used on systems with a single processor, you will find that Creo documentation will ask you to install a multi-processor HAL even if the server only has one processor.

Which HAL file you need depends on the server model, the processor type, number of processors and version of Windows NT. To simplify selecting the proper file, two “Creo Editions” of the DEC Hardware Support Disk (one for NT 3.51 and one for NT 4.0) have been created. Each disk contains the HAL files for all the DEC platforms Creo supports. Use these disks when upgrading NT 3.51 to 4.0 or upgrading a processor from EV4 to EV5.

To create a disk, unzip this file to a floppy: XX0127AD.zip

HAL file for DPW 433/500 has been replaced by the above file.
Note! This disk is used to upgrade the HAL of all platforms after installing NT 4.0. There is redundancy between this file and the Service Pack 3.1 Creo and the HAL disk used when installing NT. Some platforms are not touched by the other disks and therefore require this general update.
