You must use Symantec Antivirus with Kodak workflow software. Other virus protection software products have been found to cause problems with our workflow software, including BSOD crashes and significant performance slowdowns.
Kodak tested and/or qualified the following virus protection software during the antiVirus qualification phase:
The qualification process involved reading the Product Specification and User Guides. We called each of the suppliers to explain who we were, what our target environment was, and what needs the Kodak Workflow had from their product. None of the suppliers were able to offer any competitive advantages for our standalone installation scenario compared against Symantec's Corporate Edition (CE) edition. McAfee came close, therefore, we shortlisted the AntiVirus choice to Symantec and Network Associates.
We then tested the ability of both standalone software packages to detect several viruses that were installed on a Workflow Server. Though McAfee found some, it did not find all the viruses (including Code Red), and failed to completely remove all the viruses it did find.
Symantec found all the viruses installed on the server. It still had trouble removing some of the viruses, but freely available standalone tools provided a means of permanently removing those viruses.
Given the limitations in detecting all viruses, we tested the support line to discuss with knowledgeable technical people resolutions to our specific environment. We found Network Associates offered very poor support. On the other hand, we found Symantec was very willing to help.
There have been very few problems with Symantec SAV CE after being qualified with Kodak Workflow. There have been some fairly serious technical challenges. We have been extremely happy with how Symantec has responded to these problems and worked with us in determining solutions.
