When installing Windows NT 4.0, NT setup blue screens with - stop: 0x0000007b inaccessible boot device

Applies to

Digital Alpha 500a Personal Workstation

Problem

When installing Windows NT 4, Windows NT Setup states:

Could not determine the type of 1 or more mass storage devices

If you try to continue on with the installation, Windows NT Setup blue screens with the following BSOD stop code:

stop: 0x0000007b
inaccessible boot device

Causes

The CD-ROM installed in the DEC Alpha 500a Personal Workstation is an IDE device, not SCSI (although it lists as a SCSI device in the Control Panel in Windows NT4).

Solutions

Dependent upon the workstation type; DPW GL or older model non-GL.   IDE CD-ROM NT drivers will vary:

1. DPW GL: Upon bootup, verify for motherboard integrated QLogic SCSI controller (QLISP along with other controllers such as Adaptec's AIC78xx).  The IDE driver used in this model is the Atapi Driver for DEC Miata 500a GL (v1.01).

2. DPW non-GL: The IDE driver of this model is of type CSA-64xx (see below).

Load this IDE CD-ROM Driver during setup of Windows NT.

This should be loaded when during setup of Windows NT 4.0, you get the following message:

Could not determine the type of 1 or more mass storage devices.

Do the following:

  1. Type s to specify additional drivers.
  2. Select other.
  3. Point to the a: drive that has the IDE CD-ROM driver on it.

Note: The IDE CD-ROM may be listed as CSA 64xx when you check the adapters for the system.
