During powerup test, system stuck at Read Test

Applies to

Windows NT on the 2100A when upgraded to rev 3.9CD (ARC 4.5)

Description

Sometimes after the firmware of the 2100A is upgraded to rev 3.9CD (ARC 4.5), the system won't complete its powerup test but instead gets stuck at the Read Test before entering the Arc menu. It will sit at the Read Test for about 5 minutes before continueing on. The system seems to function fine afterwards. This problem has also been observed on some earlier versions of the Arc as well. 4.5 is of concern since it is minimum required for NT 4.0.

Causes

This problem has been linked to the QLogic. If a device is connected to the card it will take a long time to boot up. Removing the device seems to fix the problem. This problem occurs on both the 1020 and newer 1040 QLogic chipsets. Also, when using the newer EEROMCFG.EXE file this problem still persists. This problem has been linked to the Stop Queue Check Condition in the Device Parameters of the Qlogic. This option should be set to 0.

Solutions

To fix the problem:
  1. Boot the server to the ARC console where it prompts you if you want to boot NT.
  2. Insert the "WorkFlow Systems Drivers Disk" into A:
  3. Select "Run Program" and type "A:\QLogic\EEROMCFG <Enter>"
  4. Select "Select ISP1020" and hit "O" for OK.
  5. From the Configuring EEROM Parameters menu, select "D" for modifying the Device parameters.
  6. For all devices from DEV0 to DEV15, ensure that "Stop Queue Check Condition" is set to 0.
  7. Hit O for OK to accept parameters.
  8. Hit Y to update EEROM.
  9. Hit X to Exit.
  10. Hit X again to Exit.
  11. Hit O for OK to accept updates.
  12. Reboot the machine by hitting the Reset key.
