RAS Performance Hit

Applies to

  • Windows NT
  • Remote Access Service

Problem

Any server running RAS as a service will take a performance hit if the modem it's monitoring is disconnected. Presumably the system regularly polls to see if anyone is calling and, when it cannot find the modem, throws a small fit. Estimates are a 10% to 20% overall server performance drop when this is happening.

Solutions

Make this known to customers who :

1. Call us with performance issues
2. You have tried to RAS in, but their modem was disconnected.

If the customer really wants to be able to prevent interlopers, they can disconnect the modem from the wall jack. They should not turn the modem off or disconnect it from the server. Alternatively they could disable the RAS service from their services control panel, but then needs to have someone available to turn the modem on if/when we want to dial-in.
