Windows NT 4.0. The following procedure should not be used on DEC Alphas. |
Problem |
Slow application speed on PCs with more than a 256K L2 cache (and using Windows NT 4.0 as the OS). |
Solutions |
The settings for the Windows NT HAL
automatically assume you have a 256K (L2) cache. If your machine has more than 256K (the
Dell Latitude laptops have 512K), NT is not making use of the additional memory. You must
adjust this setting in order to make NT use of all of the cache on your PC. Use the
following procedure to adjust the settings on your PC:1. Go into regedit.
2. Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contol\Session Manager\Memory Management. You will see a key called SecondLevelDataCache, which is set to 0. 3. Change the key to 512. When this value is entered in the registry, it should be specified as a decimal number. This will allow NT to use all 512 kb of the L2 cache.
