Problems Starting Executables

Applies to

NT 3.51, 4.0 on Alpha and Intel platforms.

Problem

Executables fail to startup: ('.exe files can be selected directly from the Windows Explorer and will fail to startup).

Cause

Problem may lie in the registry.

Solution

The following registry key contains the default action for any executable files as they are activated:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Classes\exefile\shell\open\command

The proper entry for this key should be:

"%1" %*

If there is anything else entered as the value for this key it can cause potential problems which can be very hard to track down. You can edit this value remotely from regedt32.exe.
