Changing the default NT print server spooling directory

Applies to

Windows NT

Cause

If you are spooling large jobs and are concerned about disk space you may want to move the spooling directory.

Solution

  • Under the Start menu, go to Settings/Control Panel/Printers.
  • In the File menu, click "Server Properties" and select the "Advanced" tab.
  • Type the desired path in the Spool Folder box and click "OK".

Note: Specifying only the root directory (for example: C:\) will result in an error message of "Server spool directory location is invalid". Use C:\<directory>.

Note: The global default location for all printers spool files is: %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRINTERS.

This defines a new global default location for all printers to place spool files.

Warning: Performance may be affected if the spool folder drive is busy.
