Determining what service pack a system is running

Applies to

Windows NT

Solution

Winmsd.exe (Start|Programs|Administrative tools|Microsoft Diagnostics) can be used either remotely (through a RAS connection) or by talking the customer through launching Microsoft Diagnostics over the phone. The default startup screen for MSD shows the NT version and service pack level.

Important Note: Applying Sp3 onto a server which is already running a later service pack (SP4) will cause the system to become unusable (or at very least unstable) until SP4 is reapplied and/or a repair is done using a pre-SP4 repair disk to replace the SAM's database. Please never apply any older service packs (NT4SP3) onto customer sites that already have newer servicepacks NT4SP4 or later.
