Chkdsk Registry Key Information

Applies to

Chkdsk

Problem

Server's system drive insists on running chkdsk on boot up (and it locks up during the check).

Cause

Solution

1)Load the "system" registry hive into regedt32.exe (probably from a temporary NT install or another server).

2) Locate the following key and edit it (note that the key location will have a slight modification and will now say controlset001 under the temporary name you used to load the system hive).

The registry key that holds the chkdsk command is located here when you look at it on an active system hive:

HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\session manager\

The key is called "bootexecute" and is of type: multi_sz

You should see an entry in there that looks like:

autocheck autochk *

Delete this line from this key (yes delete the data even if it leaves the key blank--leave the key itself though)

It is safe to delete all contents from this key even if there are multiple autochk lines.
