Blue Screen After Installing Intergraph NFS Over Previous Installations of Hummingbird NFS or Legato

Applies to

Windows NT

Problem

NT will not start up without a BSOD.

Cause

Installing Intergraph NFS (and Services for Unix) over previous installations of Hummingbird NFS or Legato.

Solution

On systems with previously installed versions of  Hummingbird NFS or Legato.

To recover the system:

Make pm104 stops loading from these conflicting services by finding a way to edit the registry (Services key).

1) Shut down pm104 and pull out both hard drives (system and mirror).

2) Install both hard drives into an Allegro Rip workstation.

3) Boot the Allegro WS and assign a drive to the pm104 system partition.

4) Have the customer copy the "system" hive (and also the software hive) file from the \winnt\system32\config folder onto an internet ready computer.

5) Have the customer email the system and software hives.

6) Load this emailed hive file  into your own regedt32 and edit the HKLM\system\controlset001\services key.

7) Set all the drivers and services that are loading (start status was set to 2 which is system) for services  related to hummingbird, Intergraph, and most importantly, Legato's "portmap" service also called: "Storage Management Portmapper" in the control panel (set these conflicting services to start settings of 4 which is disabled).

8) Unload the system hive file and send it back to the customer via email.

9) Have the customer load this file back into it's original location (overwriting the original file) and shut down the Allegro server to get the pm104 hard drives out.

10) Load the system drive back into the first slot on the Alpha 4000 and start up pm104.

At this stage you should be able to boot into NT and fix the problems from within the Operating System. Have the customer uninstall hummingbird and Legato. Make a new repair disk and do chkdsk /r on their drives and test Platemaster. If Platemaster is fully functional, make a backup of their database and copy the backup file to another Platemaster server for safe keeping.

Have the customer reinstall Intergraph and reboot. There should be no errors and Platemaster should run smoothly and rebuild the mirror drive. It may need to be monitored if it does not finish the rebuild (It may have to be broken and re-established again).

Follow-up to verify the mirror is successful and they are able to create NFS shares properly through the newly installed Intergraph NFS software.
