Can't figure out why application is auto-launching at NT startup

Applies to

Windows NT

Symptoms

.An application keeps launching every time I start NT.

Cause

Applications can be started from a number of places
  • In the Startup Folder for the current user, and all user groups
  • In the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows, run and Load keys
  • %systemroot%\win.ini
  • Launched as a child process from within another application
  • As a service (you can make just about anything into a service)
  • A scheduled application

Workaround

To find the launch point, search the registry using REGEDIT on the application name.
