Determining what computer you are accessing when dialing via RAS

Applies to

Windows NT 4.0

Problem

When dialing into a system you often cannot be sure as to what physical computer you are connecting to.

Solutions

Use the following procedure to enable RAS logging which will help to determine exactly what computer you connect with RAS:

  1. Open Regedt32.exe (usually at c:\winnt\system32)
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\Parameters
  3. Change the logging key to a value of 1
  4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\
  5. Change the logging key to a value of 1

OR instead of doing Steps 1-5 manually, launch rasman.reg, which will make the registry edits for you.

  6. Reboot. After the logging is enabled you use the following procedure to view the log:
  • Dial up to the RAS server
  • Locate the ppp.log file in: (systemdrive)\winnt\system32\ras
  • Open the ppp.log file and scroll to the bottom.
  • You will see something like this:

<80 3F 02 03 00 18 03 05 00 05 01 02 0F 00 01 00 |.?..............| <01 00 00 50 54 30 30 34 38 00 |...PT0048. | >PPP packet received at 03/30/2000 16:29:35:106 >Protocol = CCP, Type = Configure-Ack, Length = 0xc, Id = 0x3, Port = 1 >80 FD 02 03 00 0A 12 06 00 00 00 01 |............ |
  • Look for the computer netbios name in the data (PT0048 in the above example)

Note: Create a shortcut to this ppp.log onto your desktop for quick access to this file.
