PCAnywhere perf counter errors rapidly fill up Windows 2000 event log

Product

  • Windows 2000
  • PCAnywhere 9.2

Platform

Intel

Error

  • Source: Perflib Event ID: 1008
The Open Procedure for service "pcAnywhere" in DLL "D:\Program Files\Symantec\pcAnywhere\PcaPerfCtrs.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. Status code returned is data DWORD 0.
  • Source: PCAnywhere Event ID: 2004
The description for Event ID ( 2004 ) in Source ( pcAnywhere ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: .

Symptoms

W2K Application event log rapidly fills up with repeated pairs of errors, one from Perflib and one from PCAnywhere. Any other “real” errors are lost (for example, Prinergy errors) because the log gets flooded with these rapidly recurring error pairs.

Solution

  Edit the registry using RegEdit.exe.

  1. Navigate to the registry key at HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PCAnywhere
  2. Locate the subkey named “Performance” and add a registry value of type REG_DWORD named “Disable Performance Counters” (note the spaces between words). Set the value to 1.
    or
Clear the Performance Counters check box from the EXCTRLST (Extensible Counter List) utility in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit. The utility will make the appropriate registry change, even on a remote computer.

Note: Symantec claims PCAnywhere 9.2 is Windows 2000-certified, but I see this error on every W2K system with PCAW installed. I see no updates or KB articles on this at the Symantec web site at the time of this writing.
