Controlling memory pool leakage in Windows 2000

Tested     Not Tested

Applies to

  Windows 2000

Problem

In some special situations, you may suspect that an application:

  • is taking too much memory
  • is gradually leaking memory, or
  • you may wish to limit the use of available system pool memory at the user level.

Causes and Workarounds

Two registry keys can be added (of type REG_DWORD). These keys do not exist in a default Windows 2000 installation.

  1. HKLM>system>currentcontrolset>services>lanmanserver>parameters>maxnonpagedmemoryusage
  2. HKLM>system>currentcontrolset>services>lanmanserver>parameters>maxpagedmemoryusage

This limit only applies to the system’s paged pool and non-paged pool of memory.
