Warning message “Low on Virtual Memory” displays in Windows NT while RIPing in Allegro or Allegro Preview RIP

Product

  • Allegro Workstation software
  • PlateMaster
  • CEPS-to-Press
  • PS-to-Press
  • Overture

Platform

Alpha, Intel

Operating system

Windows NT 4.0

Error

“Low on Virtual Memory”

Symptoms

Windows NT displays warning messages while RIPing with Allegro RIP or Allegro Preview RIP.

Cause

The virtual memory in Windows NT may be incorrectly configured. The virtual memory paging file must be at least as large as the physical memory on the workstation to prevent a memory leak. Windows NT does not handle its virtual memory correctly unless its virtual paging file size is set to be as large as its physical RAM.

Solution

Try increasing the virtual memory paging file size:
  1. Choose Start>Settings>Control Panel.
  2. Click on the System icon.
  3. On the General tab, under Computer, check the physical RAM size.
  4. On the Performance tab, check the Virtual Memory size.
  5. Compare the two. (To roughly convert Kilobytes to megabytes, take away the last three digits.)
  6. If the virtual memory is not at least 50 MB more than physical RAM, increase the virtual memory:
    1. Click the Change button.
    2. In the Drive list, highlight the drive the RIP is on.
    3. Under Total Paging File Size for All Drives, look at the Recommended value.
    4. Under Paging File Size for Selected Drive, change the value in the Initial Size box and the Maximum Size box. This value should be the recommended value under Total Paging File Size for All Drives, plus 50. For example, if the recommended value is 384 MB, you should enter 434 MB.
    5. Click the Set button.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Restart the workstation or server.
