Network performance problems with NetBEUI

Product

  • Prinergy v2.x
  • Windows 2000

Platform

Intel

Symptoms

When Windows 2000 uses the NetBEUI protocol, it affects network performance significantly:

  • Netperf utility performance test does not indicate a problem. Raw TCP/IP (opposed to NETBIOS over TCP/IP) transfers are not affected.
  • Slow network file copies: > 500 KB/s
  • Some Prinergy tasks error out and others look hung but are processing very slowly.

Cause

Although Prinergy uses TCP/IP, NetBEUI is installed as a “back door” for remote access. We have consulted Microsoft on this problem. According to them, if TCP/IP is busy, the OS will choose the NetBEUI protocol even if it’s bound later than TCP/IP.

Solution

  1. Ensure that RAS is configured properly to use TCP/IP. See Prinergy 2.0 Installation: Onsite Server Integration, Chapter 7 Configuring Remote Access, page 9.
  2. Request a RAS check from the Response Center to confirm that RAS is working properly. Confirm that PCAnywhere is working with TCP/IP.
  3. Unbind NetBEUI protocol on all servers. Do not remove the protocol, it’s sufficient to simply un-bind it. (In case it’s needed for RAS, it’s easy to re-bind it.)

If you encounter this problem in the field, please report the problem to the RC and also inform Simon Chen.
