Cannot Connect a MacOS 8.x or 9.x Client to a Server Running Windows 2003

Product

Intel

Operating System

Windows 2003

Symptoms

When attempting to connect to a Windows 2003 server from MacOS 8.x or 9.x, the following error message is received: "The User Authentication Method required by this server could not be found. Please check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again."

Cause

Services for Mac in Windows 2003 Server no longer allows Macintosh computers to use clear-text authentication.

Macintosh clients must install the Microsoft UAM Module for their version of Appleshare (supported versions are 3.6 and 3.8) in the System > Extensions > Appleshare folder on the Mac's system drive.

Solution

The UAMs are located on an automatically-created Mac share on the Windows 2003 server called Microsoft UAM Volume, though you may need to copy these extensions to a Windows 2000 server that the Mac can actually connect to in order to grab them. Simply drop the appropriate extension on the Mac's System Folder (with OS9, it's 3.8), and follow the prompts. You do not need to reboot.

The Chooser will automatically select the extension the next time you try to connect to the Windows 2003 Server. Enter the username and password you wish to use as normal in the (slightly different looking) dialog box and click OK.
