Application Note #13:  New Rider EPSF File for illustrator 7.0.1

I. Ben-Natan
(01/20/98)

A new Rider file has been produced to support Illustrator 7.0.1.

All previous versions of the CreoScitex Rider file are not compatible with Illustrator 7.x.

What is a Rider File?

Adobe Illustrator allows developers to add some PostScript code to every PostScript file and EPS file that is generated. This is done by adding a file called "Adobe Illustrator EPSF Riders" to the Plug-Ins folder of the Illustrator application.

Where to Install it?

To install the Rider file, place it in the "Plug-Ins" folder, which is in the same folder as the Illustrator application.

What does it do?

Once you install the Rider EPSF file inside the Plug-Ins folder, re-launch the Illustrator 7.0.1 application.

The Rider will now enable you to support two optional Spot’s blend in composite mode:

  1. Spot color Blend to itself, e.g. 100% PANTONE 102 to 30% PANTONE 102
  2. Spot Color to White (0%), e.g. PANTONE 543 to White or 0% color.

How to save it?

Currently the > "Save As EPSF" file format is the only supported Format in Scitex RIP.

The "Print to File" creates a totally different PS file, which converts the Spot Blend into CMYK equivalence.

Will it also work in a Non-CreoScitex RIP?

As mentioned before, the Rider is compatible only for CreoScitex RIP’s.

In other RIPs the CreoScitex RIP will skip the added line which instructed the RIP to support the Spot Blend in composite mode, therefore will cause the Spot Blend to convert into CMYK equivalence.

Known Limitation

Currently, the "Print to File" PS is not supported, only the Save As EPSF.
