Symptoms

Brisque RIP converts Duotone look alike images to CT Handshake, causing the image after RIP to consist of CMYK process colors only.

Cause

The above symptoms occur when you create Duotone look alike images in QuarkXPress by applying a color back ground to a Black only image.

When the colored background is also a CMYK color, the image knocks out the background and leaves the percentage according to the following formula:

100 - black sep value - background value.
For example, if part of the image is 40% of the CMYK, the matching CMYK background color will be 60%. 100-40 = 60.

As the image displays through a window in the LW, it is impossible to apply overprint parameters to the CMYK values of the same window that also contains the background color.

Solution

Create a Duotone image is in Photoshop.

From QuarkXPress:

Print the file preseparated. As a pre-separated image there is no problem applying the overprint correctly.
Or:
After you change the image box background to None, place the background on top of the image.
Or:

  1. Create the image as a special color.

  2. In Photoshop, export a PSImage and select the Overprint option (available only in PSImage Exporter 4 and higher).
