Platform

  • 43P-150—Tiger2
  • F50—Wildcat (2 and 4 CPUs)
  • 44P-170—Hammerhead
  • 6F1—Condor (2,4 and 6 CPUs)

Operating system

IBM AIX 4.3.3

Error

“Mon-dd-yy hh:ms condor3 sendmail ( 31084): unable to qualify my own domain name (lot6 ) -- using short name.”

Symptoms

The following message appears in Smit , Scismit, or the Terminal prompt (#) at a frequency of every 20 seconds:

“ Mon-dd-yy hh:ms condor3 sendmail ( 31084): unable to qualify my own domain name (lot6 ) -- using short name.”

The above message is generated every time the sendmail program sends mail to the local user.

This problem is accentuated with heavy mail traffic.

Cause

The nameserver is in relative domain name format and the computer is not using the DNS service.

This message appears on all computers that have not configured the nameserver to absolute domain name format or fully qualified domain name, that is, name.subdomain.subdomain.domain or 149.115.39.1, and that are not using the DNS service via stil.scitex.com.

Solution

  1. Open smit hosts.

  2. Select Change/Show ...
  3. Press F4 to select name of the local host to change.
  4. Add an alias that contain the local host name plus a dot (For example, condor3.)
  5. Save the changes.
  6. Quit smit.

Do not restart sendmail. The above solution will immediately solve the problem.

This solution should not cause problems when the host is attached to DNS. The host name will be ignored because the name resolution services are configured to use DNS by default.
