Symptoms

A colorized TIFF file printed by QuarkXPress 4.0 or 5.0, appears as a negative, or appears with its background knocked-out (white).

Cause

Creo has two different extensions that both support printing colorized TIFF images with QuarkXPress. These extensions are Creo Print XT and Creo Color TIFF XT. If both of these extensions are enabled, when the TIFF file is printed, the file appears as a negative, or it appears with its background knocked-out.

If both extensions are active, and the colorized TIFF file prints as a negative, then in the CreoPrint XT extension, the following settings cause the problem to occur:

  • the Automatic Colorized TIFF handling for PS L2  check box is selected
  • the Exclude colorized TIFF from APR check box is selected
If both extensions are active, and the colorized TIFF file prints with its background knocked-out, then in the Creo Print XT extension, the following settings cause the problem to occur:
  • the Automatic Colorized TIFF handling for PS L2 check box is selected
  • the Exclude colorized TIFF from APR check box is not selected

Creo recommends that you print from QuarkXPress with the Creo Color TIFF XT extension only.
It is possible however, to print colorized TIFF files correctly with both extensions enabled if you configure the Creo Print XT extension as described in the solution section below.

Solution

  1. In QuarkXPress, open the XT dialog box.

  2. Click the Preferences tab.

  3. Clear the Support Colorized TIFFs or PS L2 check box. The Creo Print XT extension is disabled.

  4. Select the KNOCKOUT image trap method.
    Note:
In QuarkXPress 5.0, KNOCKOUT is the default image trap method.

  5. Before printing, open the Creo Spot Colors XT extension dialog box, and verify that the job's spot colors appear.

  6. Print the file.

  7. In Brisque or PS/M, RIP the file by selecting the Specific Info option from the Spot Colors area.

Or,

Use both extensions and configure the Creo Print XT extension to print colorized TIFF files correctly:

  1. In QuarkXPress, open the Creo Print XT dialog box.
  2. Clear the Automatic Colorized TIFF handling for PS L2  check box.
