HELIOS error message when mounting Brisque 4.x/5.x volumes from Macintosh

Product

  • Brisque® 5.x
  • Brisque 4.x

Platform

All Brisque platforms

Operating system

  • Mac® OS® 9
  • Mac OS X

Symptoms

When you try to log onto a Brisque workstation from a Mac station via HELIOS® (AppleTalk®), an error is displayed even though the maximum number of HELIOS licenses has not been reached.
Note: Unless you purchased a HELIOS expansion license, the maximum number of simultaneous connections (per Brisque workstation) is 6.

For Mac OS 9, the following error appears: This server will not allow any additional users to log on. Try again later.
For Mac OS X, the following error appears: Login Failed: Unknown user, incorrect password or log on is disabled.

Cause

On HELIOS 2.5, if an incorrect username is used when connecting to the UNIX station via a Mac, one of the HELIOS licenses will lock-up. If multiple attempts are made, multiple licenses will lock-up, until the maximum number of HELIOS users is reached.
On HELIOS 2.6, a record of the logged out user is maintained for some time, until deleted by the system.

Solution

There are two alternative workarounds to this problem.

Workaround 1:

On the Brisque, log into the Terminal window as root/ripro and perform the following:

  1. To locate the process numbers that belong to the incorrect logins, type:
    • cd /usr/local/es and press Enter
    • swho -c and press Enter.
  2. A list similar to the following list will appear:
Server PID Address User When Comment
    AFPServer 26860 10.2.25.25 root Fri 9:52 brisque11.1.0
    AFPServer 15236 10.2.25.25 macuser Fri 9:55
    AFPServer 24022 10.2.25.25 <unknown> Fri 9:50
    AFPServer 25816 10.2.25.25 <unknown> Fri 9:50
    AFPServer 20484 10.2.25.25 <unknown> Fri 9:50
    AFPServer 26334 10.2.25.25 <unknown> Fri 9:51

The <unknown> users are caused by faulty login attempts.
  3. To delete the unknown users:
    • Write down the PID numbers of the <unknown> users. In the above example, 24022, 25816 and so on.
    • Type: kill -9 [PID number] and press Enter.
      For example: kill -9 24022
    • Repeat the above command for all the <unknown> PIDs.

The login from a Mac should now be OK.
Note: Rebooting the Brisque will also fix the problem.

Workaround 2:

A new script can be run.

  1. Paste the script below into /scitex/version/scripts/kill_unknown.sh
  2. Type: chmod +x /scitex/version/scripts/kill_unknown.sh
  3. Run the script.

The script:
#!/bin/ksh
#script called "kill_unknown.sh,it will run once an hour
#add crontab entry
crontab -l |grep "kill_unknown" > /dev/null
if [[ $? != 0 ]] ;then
crontab -l > /tmp/crontab1
echo "0 * * * * /scitex/version/scripts/kill_unknown.sh" >> /tmp/crontab1
crontab /tmp/crontab1
fi

cd /usr/local/es
kill `/usr/local/es/swho|grep unknown|grep -v grep|awk '{ print $2 }'` >/dev/null 2>&1

Note: After running the script once, it is added to crontab and will run once an hour.
