Improving slow Brisque 5 performance

Product

Brisque® 5.x

Platform

All Brisque platforms

Operating system

IBM® AIX® 5.2

Symptoms

Slow Brisque 5 GUI and system performances.

Solution

It was found that adjusting specific kernel parameters enables more efficient paging activity, thus improving the performance of Brisque 5.x.
Prior to finding this solution, the performance symptoms were attributed to lack of memory, and a message with new RAM pre-requisites was sent to customers. However in light of this new finding, the new RAM pre-requisites were changed from mandatory to highly recommended.

The below procedure permanently modifies and immediately updates the kernel parameters. There is no need to log out or reboot—it can even be performed while the Brisque application is running. However, if a reboot is not performed, the changes will only be effective after half an hour of operation. In order to immediately experience the improvement, you should log out > log in to UNIX® as root/ripro > perform the changes and then reboot.

This procedure can be performed, remotely or during a customer visit, on every Brisque 5 workstation that does not have Upd 10.2 or version 5.1. Customers will experience an improved GUI and general system performances.

Check your current setting by running the following command:
vmo -a | grep -E "minperm%|maxperm%|maxclient%"
The following appears:
minperm% = 20
maxperm% = 80
maxclient% = 80

This shows the Brisque 5 original kernel parameters.

Run the following command once to update the machine to the correct parameters.
Note: It is not a problem if by mistake you run it more than once since the settings will not change.
vmo -p -o maxclient%=30 -o maxperm%=30 -o minperm%=10

Check your new setting by running the following command:
vmo -a | grep -E "minperm%|maxperm%|maxclient%"
The following appears:
minperm% = 10
maxperm% = 30
maxclient% = 30

This change is implemented in the currently released Upd 10.2 on top of FP version 5.0.61.10 and 5.1.19.
