Samba issues in Brisque 5.0

Product

Brisque® 5.0

Platform

All Brisque 5.0 platforms

Operating system

IBM® AIX® 5.2

Symptoms

Various Samba problems.

Cause

Samba limitations.

Solution

The following issues were identified when using Samba with Brisque 5.0:

  1. A second file is created for each file that is copied from Mac OS® X. For example, if the original file is test.job, the second file is ._test.job. A rsrc is also created for the second file.
Note: Sometimes the second file is ignored by the Brisque 5 application and is not RIPed, and sometimes the file is RIPed. For example: ._test.job (folder) is not RIPed, while ._test.ps (file) is RIPed.
  2. Not all hidden files are in fact hidden. For example, .jt files.
To resolve this issue, on OS X only, open the /etc/smb.conf file on OS X and add the line:
    hide files = /*.assg/*.db/*jt/
  3. Brisque 5 looses Samba shares after application login.
The cause of this issue is that the current syntax [brisque04.1.0] in the smb.conf file is faulty.
The recommended syntax is [brisque04.brisque04.1.0] (mandatory for proper Samba operation). The application checks this file upon each login (not reboot) and removes incorrect mounts.
Note: In OS X environment, there is a limitation of maximum 12 characters. This limitation is irrelevant in the Insight environment.
  4. AppleShare® (HELIOS) resources are kept in the .rsrc subfolder of each existing folder. However, Mac OS X resources are kept in the same folder (same level), with a syntax ._ foldername .
These databases are independant, and are not synchronized.
As a result, you get a different folder view when browsing the same folder with Samba or AppleShare mount. The Samba view does not display the standard Creo job/page icons.
Therefore, it is recommended to use one flow consistently—Samba or AppleShare, and not to switch between them.
  5. Sometimes there is no pull-down list in the Mac OS X Chooser when mounting a volume via Samba. The reason for this may be that the Samba mount point on OS X is 12 characters long or less.
The recommended solution is to mount the Brisque Serve volume from OS X using the full path in the OS X Chooser. For example—smb://timna1/timna1.timna1.6.0
    or smb://root:ripro@timna1/timna1.timna1.6.0
