Renaming an hdisk

Product

  • Brisque® 5.x
  • Brisque 4.x

Platform

All Brisque 4.x and 5.x platforms

Operating system

IBM® AIX® 4.3.3, 5.2

Symptoms

On rare occasions you need to rename a hdisk. For example, change hdisk1 to hdisk2, including renaming the system disk. 2 possible scenarios for renaming a disk are described below:

  • When you add a disk to an AIX system, the disk is automatically named hdiskX, where X is the next available number. When hdiskX is configured via scismit, the following are created: Volume Group svgX, Logical Volumes slvX.0... and Data Volumes /dataVolumes/hostname.X.0... If one of the configured items already exists, the hdiskX configuration fails and you need to rename hdiskX to hdiskY.
  • hdiskX is configured with Y volumes. In this case, you want to rename the disk in order to synchronize the hdisk number with its volume number.

Solution

The following procedure explains how to rename an hdisk. The mvhdisk script is required for this procedure:

  • In Brisque v5.1, mvhdisk is included in the Brisque version
  • For Brisque 4.x and 5.0 versions, you need to download mvhdisk.tar and type tar xvf mvhdisk.tar

To obtain a list of current disk drives:

Type mvhdisk -l
The current disk drive list appears. For example:
hdisk0 rootvg [system disk]
hdisk1 None [has AIX system]
*
hdisk2 svg2 hostname.2.0
hdisk3 svg4 hostname.4.0
**
hdisk4 None

* In case of dual boot, the current system disk is listed as
rootvg [system disk] and the other system disk is listed as None [has AIX system]

** In this example, hdisk3 contains volumes with Volume Group svg4 so you cannot configure hdisk4. You can either swap the hdisk names (hdisk3 and hdisk4), or you can rename hdisk4 to hdisk5.

To change hdiskX to hdiskY:

Type mvhdisk. At the current name prompt, type hdiskX. At the new name prompt, type hdiskY
Alternatively: Type mvhdisk hdiskX hdiskY

The script verifies that hdiskX exists and that hdiskY is free. Then the script looks for svgY, slvY.0..., volumeY.0... You are alerted if these already exist on another disk.

Notes:

  • hdisk names are temporary. These names might change during cold start or device reconfiguration, depending on the physical sequence.
  • Before configuring a new disk in scismit, you can rename an existing hdisk. After the new disk configuration, you can rename to the original name.
