Mac OS X 10.4 cannot connect to Brisque 5 client when hostname contains uppercase letters

Product

Brisque® 5.x

Platform

All Brisque platforms

Operating system

  • IBM® AIX® 5.2
  • Mac OS® X version 10.4

Symptoms

The Mac OS X v10.4 client fails to connect to a Brisque 5 client whose hostname contains uppercase letters—for example, timnaSMP.

Cause

A problem in the NetInfo Manager of Mac OS X v10.4, which occurs when lowercase letters are used.

Note: This problem did not occur with previous versions of Mac OS X.

Solution

There are two possible workarounds for this problem.

Workaround 1—rename the hostname in NetInfo manager:

  1. Quit the Brisque 5 client.
  2. Delete the current hostname from the NetInfo Manager.
  3. Create a new hostname using only lowercase letters (for example, rename timnaSMP to timnasmp).
  4. Connect the Macintosh station to the Brisque 5 client using the new hostname—timnasmp.

Workaround 2—adding hostname using vi:

  1. Log in as root user (refer to the note below).
  2. Using vi, open the /private/etc/hosts file on your Mac OS X station.
  3. Add the Brisque 5 hostname and IP address to the file and save the file.
