Loading firmware update for Brisque platforms

Product

  • Brisque® 5.x
  • Brisque 4.x
  • Brisque Serve

Platform

All Brisque platforms

Operating system

IBM® AIX® 4.3.3, 5.2

Solution

This procedure describes how to update the firmware for Brisque (RS/6000 and pSeries) platforms. The machine firmware should be up to date in order to support new devices and boards. The Firmware Update CD (P/N 634-00397A) is available for all Brisque platforms. You can obtain the firmware for your specific platform from the CD (browse to the required download), or download from this page.

There are 2 alternative loading procedures, which are described in further detail; the first procedure is the recommended one:

  • Loading option 1 (recommended)—AIX® mode (for normal operation on machines running AIX operating system)
  • Loading option 2—DOS mode (using DOS diskettes for machines that cannot reboot)

Notes for all loading options:
On 43P-150 and 44P-170, the new firmware changes the GUI SMS menu to a text-based menu:
- To access SMS, use 1 instead of F1
- To boot from the CD, use 5 instead of F5
After loading the new firmware, the SMS menus on the various platforms change:
- GUI SMS [F1] for E30, 43P-140 (Tiger1), F50
- Text SMS [1] for 43P-150 (Tiger2), 44P-170 (Hammerhead), 6F1, 6E3, 6E4

Loading option 1—AIX mode

Note: This loading option is not applicable for E30 and 43P-140 (Tiger1); use option 2 for these platforms.

  1. Download the AIX file that corresponds to the type of your Brisque platform:
  2. Create a new folder on the Brisque machine and copy the file to the new folder.
  3. Change the directory to the new folder.
  4. Uncompress the file: type uncompress xx_AIX_FW.tar.Z. Then untar the file: type tar xvf xxx_AIX_FW.tar (where xxx is the type of your Brisque platform).
  5. Type fw_update.sh and press Enter. The version numbers of the current and required firmware appear.
  6. At the loading firmware prompt, answer yes and press Enter. Press Enter again to confirm system reboot.
Attention: Reboot may take several minutes. Do not switch off the machine during reboot.
Note: On F50, the machine reboots twice—once when loading system firmware and once when loading service processor firmware.
Wait for the Loading completed message during machine startup (before login). The message is displayed for several seconds. You can view the message also in the firmware program log file, located at: /scitex/version/logs/fw_update.log.

Loading option 2—DOS mode (using diskettes):

  1. Download the DOS file that corresponds to the type of your Brisque platform:
  2. Unzip the file on a Windows® computer.
  3. For 6F1, 6E3 and 6E4, execute the exe files one by one to create the diskettes. For E30, 43P, 44P and F50, there are no exe files, so you should copy the img file to a new diskette.
Note: On F50 and 44P-170, one img file is for system firmware and one img file is for service processor firmware. Copy each img file to a separate diskette.
On F50, the WIL file is for system firmware and the wc file is for service processor.
On 44P-170, the ROS file is for system firmware and the sh file is for service processor.
  4. Label the diskettes accordingly.
  5. Depending on your machine:
    • E30, 43P, 44P and F50: use the diskettes to load the firmware via SMS. To access the SMS menu, press F1 or 1 during power-on.
    • On newer platforms, use the diskettes to load the firmware via the Service Processor menu. To access the Service Processor menu:
      - Connect a laptop to the serial connector of the machine (machine in OK status)
      - Select (1) Service Processor Setup menu.
      - Select (7) Program Flash EPROM menu.
  6. The diskette mode on 44P-170 contains a very old firmware version. If you must use this old version, reload the firmware using the AIX loading options described previously.
