When you change the default gateway, your change is not saved after reboot

Product

Brisque® 5.0

Platform

All Brisque platforms

Operating system

IBM® AIX® 5.2

Symptoms

Changing the default gateway via smit is not saved after reboot, and the system resets to the previous default gateway.

Cause

AIX 5 networking works differently from previous versions, and enables multipath routing (see the AIX5 Red book for details).
As a result, the routing flushing does not remove the old gateway from the inet0, which is the main AIX internet device.

Solution

Remove the previous gateway manually:

  1. To flush all defined gateways (routes), type route -n -f
  2. Define the new gateway via smit TCP/IP (10.4.30.1).
  3. To check the existence of the previous gateway (10.4.26.1): type netstat -rn The following appears:
    Routing tables
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use If PMTU Exp Groups
Route tree for Protocol Family 2 (Internet)
    default    10.4.30.1   UGc   0    0      en0   -   -
    default    10.4.30.1   UGHW  0    2253   en0   -   1
    default    10.4.30.1   UGHW  0    1      en0   -   -
    default    10.4.31.253 UGb   0    0      en0   -   - =>
  4. To check if the old route (10.4.26.1) still exists in inet0 device, type lsattr -El inet0 The following appears:
    authm  65536  Authentication Methods  True
bootup_option no  Serial Optical Network Interface  True
    gateway  Gateway  True
    hostname  timna5  Host Name  True
    rout6  FDDI Network Interface   True
    route  net,-hopcount,0,,0,10.4.26.1  Route  True
  5. To check the ODM for the stanza for the old route, type
odmget CuAt|grep 10.4.26.1 The following could appear value="net,-hopcount,0,,0,10.4.26.1"
  6. To delete the old reoute from ODM, type
    odmdelete -o CuAt -q value="net,-hopcount,0,,0,10.4.26.1"
  7. To check that new route (10.4.30.1) is defined in inet0, type lsattr -El inet0 The following appears:
    authm 65536 Authentication Methods True
bootup_option no Serial Optical Network Interface True
    gateway Gateway True
    hostname timna5 Host Name True
    rout6 FDDI Network Interface True
    route net,-hopcount,0,,0,10.4.30.1 Route True
  8. To run bosboot and reboot the machine, type
    bosboot -a -d hdiskX
where X is the number of the system disk. The following appears:
bosboot: Boot image is 18180 512 byte blocks
  9. Reboot all Macintosh and Windows clients that are connected to this Brisque machine.
