Connection problems from Mac OS X 10.4 to Samba server

Product

  • Brisque 5.x
  • Brisque 4.x
  • Brisque serve 4

Platform

All Brisque platforms

Operating system

Samba on Macintosh OS X 10.4

Symptoms

Connection problems when trying to mount Brisque volumes (running Samba) from Mac OS X 10.4:
You can browse to the computer and find it on the network, and when you double-click its alias, the user/password screen appears. However, when you click OK, a message informs you that the alias cannot be used because the original cannot be found, and you are told to use Fix/Delete alias option. But FIX cannot be used because you cannot access the network in finder.

In addition, when you connect as smb://IP Address, the login appears with the error: some data cannot be read or written.

Note: There are no connection problems from Mac OS X 10.3.

Solution

Make sure that you are not currently connected to any Samba or Windows (SMB/CIFS) servers and that you do not have any Samba or Windows-related error messages open. Then perform the following procedure:

  1. Open the Terminal (under /Applications/Utilities).
  2. At the prompt, type: sudo pico /etc/nsmb.conf and press return.
  3. Enter your administrator password and press return.
  4. An empty file should appear at the bottom of the window. If it does not appear, this indicates that the file already exists, and you need to add the following text to the file:
    [default]
    minauth=none
  5. Save the file (press control+O), press return, and exit the window (control+X).
  6. Type: sudo chmod a+r /etc/nsmb.conf and press return.
  7. Restart your computer.
