Different IP addresses are returned when pinging Brisque with Samba from Windows

Product

  • Kodak® Brisque® 5.x software
  • Brisque 4.x software

Platform

All Brisque platforms

Operating system

IBM® AIX® 4.3.3, 5.2

Symptoms

From a Microsoft® Windows® station, when you ping Brisque on which Samba is enabled, different IP addresses may be returned for the Brisque host name. This causes denied access to Brisque shares.

Cause

When there is no DNS entry in the Windows host file, Windows uses a NetBios broadcast to resolve the IP address for the Brisque host name. Samba is set up to detect all active interfaces on the Brisque, even if they are not physically connected to the network. Sometimes an IP address is bound to one of the disconnected network interfaces.

Solution

  1. Use ifconig - a to identify the correct network interface on Brisque.
  2. Use vi to open the smb.conf file, which is located in /user/local/samba/lib.
  3. Verify that the following 2 entries exist in the [global] section of the file. If they do not exist, edit the file:
    • interfaces = en2
    • bind interfaces only = Yes
  4. Restart Samba on Brisque.
