Ugrading from Brisque Serve 4.0.21 to version 4.0.35 fails on an F50 platform

Product

  • Brisque® Serve 4.0.35
  • Brisque Serve 4.0.21

Platform

F50—Wildcat (2 and 4 CPUs)

Operating system

IBM® AIX® 4.3.3

Symptoms

When you attempt to upgrade an F50 platform from Brisque Serve version 4.0.21 to 4.0.35, the loading process fails.

Cause

The F50 patform’s firmware level is too low to load Brisque Serve 4.0.35.

Solution

Check the current firmware level installed in the F50 platform, and if too low, load new firmware.

To check the current firmware level:
  1. At the AIX command line prompt, type
lscfg -vp | grep alterable and press Enter.
This is an example of what appears onscreen.
    ROM Level.(alterable).......xxxWIL (System firmware level)
    ROM Level.(Non-alterable)...wcxxxxxx
ROM Level.(Alterable).......wcxxxxxx (Service processor firmware level)
  2. Make sure that there the following firmware versions exist:
    • System firmware version L03115
    • Service processor firmware version wc010611
If any of these firmware versions are not present, load new firmware.

To load new firmware:

  1. Quit the Brisque Serve application.
  2. At the AIX command line prompt, type mkdir /tmp/fwupdate and press Enter.
Note: If the directory /tmp/fwupdate already exists, delete its contents before continuing.
  3. Download and transfer the 7025F50F.BIN AIX format file to the directory /tmp/fwupdate.
  4. To unpack the 7025F50F.BIN file:
    • Type cd /tmp/fwupdate and press Enter.
    • Type chmod +x 7025f50f.bin and press Enter.
    • Type ./7025f50f.bin and press Enter.
The following files are unpacked (inflated):
    • ReadMe.TXT
    • WILxxxxx.img
    • wcxxxxx.img
  5. At the command line prompt:
    • Type cd /usr/lpp/diagnostics/bin and press Enter.
    • Type ./update_flash -f /tmp/fwupdate/WILxxxxx.img and press Enter.
    The following message appears:
***** WARNING: Continuing will reboot the system! *****
    Do you wish to continue?
    Enter 1=Yes or 2=No

  6. Type 1 (Yes) and press Enter to accept the request to proceed with the firmware update.
Note: After you accept the confirmation request to proceed with the firmware update, the system will reboot, apply the new firmware, and return you to the AIX command line prompt.
This process can take between one to ten minutes to complete, depending on the configuration of the target system.
  7. When the Apply the Service Processor firmware update message appears, type 1 (Yes) and press Enter.
The system will reboot and apply the new firmware.
Important: Do not turn off the machine’s power during this process.
  8. Log in and enter the following commands:
    • Type CD /usr/lpp/diagnostics/bin and press Enter.
    • Type ./update_flash -f /tmp/fwupdate/wcxxxxx.img and press Enter.
    The following message appears:
***** WARNING: Continuing will reboot the system! *****
    Do you wish to continue?
    Enter 1=Yes or 2=No
  10. When the Apply the Service Processor firmware update message appears, type 1 (Yes) and press Enter.
The system will reboot and apply the new firmware.
Important: Do not turn off the machine’s power during this process.
  11. Type the following command and check that the new firmware is loaded successfully:
Type lscfg -vp | grep alterable and press Enter.
The following is an example of what appears onscreen after the new firmware has been successfully loaded:
    ROM Level.(alterable).......L0xxxx (System firmware level)
    ROM Level (non-alterable)...wcxxxxxx
ROM Level (alterable).......wcxxxxxx (Service processor firmware level)
