Definitions of the “Boxes” Used in PDF Files: Media Box, Crop Box, Trim Box, and Bleed Box

Product

Pandora® All

Operating system

Macintosh® & Windows®

Symptoms

PDF files reference four types of boxes: Media Box, Crop Box, Trim Box, and Bleed Box.

Solution

The differences between the boxes are as follows:

Media Box: This is a rectangle that specifies the natural size of the page; for example, the dimensions of a letter-size sheet of paper. This rectangle includes any extended area surrounding the finished page for bleed, printing marks, or other similar purposes.

Crop Box: This is a rectangle that specifies the default clipping region for the page when it is displayed or printed. The default is the value of the Media Box. For example, if the Media Box is letter-size, it also includes extra area for the bleeds, but the Crop Box is limited to the 8-1/2 x 11-inch size of the paper.

Trim Box: This is a rectangle that specifies the intended finished size of the page; for example, the dimensions of a letter-sized sheet of paper. In some cases, the Media Box is a larger rectangle that includes printing instructions, trim marks, or other content. The default of the Trim Box is the value of the Crop Box.

Bleed Box: This is a rectangle that specifies the region to which all page content should be clipped if the page is being output in a production environment. A bleed area is desired to accommodate physical limitations of cutting, folding, and trimming equipment. The actual printed page may include printers’ marks that fall outside the Bleed Box. The default is the value of the Crop Box.

The Media Box is the only box that is required in a PDF file. If no other boxes are specified, the Media Box is used as the trim size in Pandora.

If the Crop Box and/or Trim Box are specified, Pandora uses them for the trim size. If both the Crop Box and Trim Box are specified, Pandora uses the Trim Box.
