Symptoms

On layouts with a large number of die stations (500+) and a large number of marks, the Kodak Prinergy® software may fail to correctly import the file. In the Prinergy Diagnostics log, you will see the import/export job ticket processor will terminate with an unknown, unhandled error.

Cause

Pandora embeds a copy of the Pandora job information in the Prinergy job ticket file (PJTF). This information is used when layouts are double-clicked in Prinergy, allowing Pandora to reopen and edit the layout. If the Pandora job information is excessively large, Prinergy will fail to read the file and stop responding.

Solution(s)

There are two possible workarounds for this issue:

  • Reduce the file's complexity by determining what elements add information to the job. Here are some examples:
    • Very complex bleed paths on many die stations; for example, a path with thousands of points used on 300 or more die stations. In this case, identify areas where you can simplify the die and reduce the number of points in the bleed path.
    • Multiple marks attached to each die station in a job with 300 or more die stations. In this case, look at alternative marks, such as one large mark that overlays the entire die station instead of multiple smaller marks bound to the die station.
  • Use a format other than PJTF.
Exporting JDF from Pandora will give you a format that excludes the Pandora job information and avoids the problem.
You could also export the entire layout from Pandora as a layout sized PDF, and refine it in Prinergy using the option "Treat Input Files as Flats" in the import process plan. This alternative creates a large file, and you can't replace 1-up artworks in the layout.

If you use a format other than PJTF, you cannot double-click and edit the layout, since the layout does not retain Pandora job information. If you want to edit the layout, you need to separately save a Pandora file (.pnd) to disk after exporting the layout for Prinergy. You need to directly load that Pandora saved file rather than launching the layout from Prinergy Workshop. Since Pandora files are not automatically backed up by Prinergy, you may also need to backup the layout elsewhere to ensure the Pandora layout will be available later.
