Gaps or White Lines at Edges of OPI-Linked Images in QuarkXPress 4.11 - 5.x Files [ID: 80523]

Product

Preps® All

Operating system

Macintosh® & Windows®

Symptoms

Gaps may occur at the edges of omitted TIFF and EPS images when those images are OPI linked in TrapWise®, Preps®, or an OPI server. These gaps are the result of a difference in two calculations that should be identical. Specifically, in the QuarkXPress®-generated PostScript® code, the placement of the fill for the picture box does not match the OPI image placement information.

QuarkXPress does not support fractional Adobe® points (72 points per inch) in some places and may round up those numbers. The difference in the calculations for the placement of the picture box fill and the OPI image placement may occur when one or more of the following items are not whole Adobe points: page size, picture box placement, and/or picture box size. If all of these dimensions are whole Adobe points, the calculations match.

When TIFF and EPS images are not omitted from the QuarkXPress output file, there is no gap because the image is placed using the picture box calculations. However, if an image is replaced by an OPI server, the gap returns because the OPI image placement information does not match the position of the image as described by QuarkXPress.

Cause

* QuarkXPress uses the upper left corner as the 0,0 location, while PostScript uses the lower left as the 0,0 location.

* If the document page size, picture box size, and/or location on the page are not whole Adobe points, a gap occurs during OPI image replacement.

* Picture boxes sized at whole Adobe point values and drawn at whole Adobe point locations on document page sizes that are whole Adobe points never have gaps.

* QuarkXPress picture boxes in the PostScript code do not exactly match the size of the OPI clip or %QRKImageClip.

* %ALDImagePosition and %QRKImageClip sizes and locations do not exactly match.

* Gaps are always less than .999 of an Adobe point.

* OPI comments can sometimes be hand edited to fix the gap, but every image always needs different adjustments to remove the gaps. This is why PXT or any post-processing application cannot fix this QuarkXPress issue.

Solution

There are two workarounds for this issue:

1. Do not omit images when creating output files from QuarkXPress.

2. Make sure the document page size, picture box size, and location of the picture box on the page are all in whole Adobe points.
