A process plan in Prinergy spools an HP-RTL to an NT print device, which is created via LPD (Line Printer Daemon) that looks up the IP address of the Sherpa. The Sherpa must come equipped with a 10/100baseT card and be capable of accepting HP-RTL files. All other methods of connecting (for example, via Printdrive), would probably work but have not been tested, and probably never will be, since the ethernet card approach is by far the cheapest and most robust solution.
Spooling and printing times are acceptable at worst. However, some Sherpas recalibrate themselves far too frequently, leading to unnecessary delays in printing. See the Usage section.
According to the customer who owns the first Sherpa to be connected via Prinergy, there is too much tension in the spring that is connected to the ink nozzles. This leads to the ink pens automatically recalibrating themselves after only one or two plots, when the interval should be much longer. The customer was able to temporarily solve this problem by opening up the machine and taking some tension out of the spring, but the problem manifested itself again after a couple of months. The customer also reported serious difficulties in obtaining proper supplies, such as ink refills and extra parts. However, this could just be a regional issue.
CreoScitex field apps specialists should have better things to do with their time than registering the back-ups on this machine. It is definitely less time-consuming than the Barco Impress but expect to spend at least a couple of hours configuring the process plans. Note that registration is at least somewhat dependent on the skill of the operator to feed the paper into the Sherpa properly square. To put it more succinctly: Try to get the Agfa representative to configure for registration. After all, it's their machine. If worse comes to worse, and a CreoScitex representative is stuck doing the back-ups, under no circumstances promise a back-up that is perfectly registered. At absolute best, you will get within +/- 1 mm.
You cannot vary the resolution of the plotter by using different Prinergy process plans. The resolution of the plotter is fixed by settings on the control panel of the Sherpa. That is to say, if you send a 720 dpi HP-RTL to the plotter and it is fixed for 360 dpi output, it will plot the file at twice the size. If you send a 360 dpi file and the Sherpa is fixed for 720 dpi output, it will come out twice as small.
