As the Spin Flow software takes care of registering the signatures, there is minimal configuration needed in the process plan editor. The settings used in the qualification test were:
Layout: Roll-fed
Width: 35.75 inches
Auto-rotate clockwise
Render at: 600 dpi
Staccato screening
RTL data from Prinergy is spooled to a hot folder monitored by Spin Flow software.
During testing, the Spin Flow v2.10a software was loaded on a single CPU 866 mhz box running Windows 2000 Professional. The Spin Flow server must have 256 MB of RAM or higher to avoid disk thrashing. The Spin Flow software took about 2 minutes to digest each RTL flat from Prinergy and spool to the HP DesignJet 1050C. After about a 5-minute latency period, the plotter ran at engine speed.
Registration is not as tight as with an Iris43WIDE or Barco Impress: +/-1 mm. However, this seems acceptable to most customers, given that the plotter does automated back-ups. Firmware versions earlier than 1.25 do not set vacuum strength high enough, leading to jamming problems, but the latest upgrades seem to have fixed that problem. However, the first and last ten feet of any roll of paper always jams in the plotter, possibly due to curling of the media. Registration of Work-and-turn impositions happens automatically. Registration of Work-and-tumble impositions, with A and B sides, happens automatically as well. However, Work-and-tumble impositions with a side A only will not register unless the slug is duplicated and placed at a equal distance from the top and bottom of the imposition. This is due to the Spin Flow software not being able to differentiate between the beginning of the signature and the beginning of the slug.
