If Archiver fails to retrieve a job: - Check for error messages in the DiagView and history logs. - Is the tape offline and waiting to mount? If you ignore the prompt to insert the tape, it will block all the tasks queuing up for archiving and retrieving. Use the operator request in Media Manager/RSM to insert the requested medium to continue the retrieve. - Is the tape disabled and waiting to be enabled? If yes, enable the tape and the retrieve will continue. - Is there a CRC error on the tape? If yes, see the workaround "When trying to retrieve a job, the process plan fails with a CRC error" under the keyword "archiver - retrieve". If Archiver fails to archive a job: - Check for error messages in the DiagView and history logs. - Is there an available tape to archive? If there is not enough space to archive the job, you will see the error "no writable medium available...." and should register a new tape into the system. - Is the available tape offline and waiting for insertion? If yes, insert the requested tape. Failing to do so can block all the tasks queued up for archiving. - Is the tape disabled? If yes, the archive will fail with "no writable medium available....". Enable the tape in Media Manager/RSM and the task will continue. - - Is the tape write-protection on? If yes, set the tape to not write protected. Note: ERSM will crash and the JTP will fail to run if there is any hardware problem on the archiving device or the tape library is not online. If Archiver fails to archive or retrieve, check the hardware: - Is there an alarm or error message on the LCD panel? - Is a tape stuck in the picker? If yes, order a new unit for replacement. - Is a cleaning light on? If yes, see the workaround "How do I handle a drive with the "USE CLEANING TAPE" light on? " under the keyword "archiver FAQs". - Is the library on-line? - Are there any time-out errors for the SCSI card? Use FilterEventlog to capture the SCSI event log related to the tape driver. If yes, check the drive, cable, and the SCSI card. - Is the customer using the approprite tape driver? Check tape devices under Control Panel. - Are the terminator and SCSI cable connected properly? A single-end drive must use a single-end SCSI card and terminator, vs a differential SCSI drive that uses a differential SCSI card and terminator. - Under NT, look for the device, hkey_local_machine\hardware\devicemap\scsi. If the archiving device does not exist under the NT registry, NT won't see the device. Check the SCSI card and terminator. A single DLT drive usually has single-end SCSI, and connected with Adaptec 2940uw, 2940u2w. Tape library is usually a differential SCSI and connected with Adaptec 2944 with a differential terminator. - If NT registry can see the device, try to run NTbackup. If it works, then it is archiver issue. If it does not work, then it is a hardware issue.
To test the tape library: - Disable ERSM. - Use the LCD panel to load, unload, mount, and dismount the tape a couple times. To test the single DLT drive: - Disable ERSM. - Load and unload the tape in the drive. If the archiving device does not work properly (such as a tape is stuck in the drive, or the device is having problems loading or unloading tapes), the unit may need to be replaced. Permanent fix: |
