Solution

The algorithm to select media and divide the archives between tapes is the same for both the 1.1 and 2.0 versions of Archiver.

This algorithm has been developed to optimize a number of goals including use of multiple drives for speed, efficient use of tape space, and error tolerance.

For a stand-alone drive, Archiver should always select the tape within the drive unless there is not enough space remaining on the tape to store the entire archive. In this case, it is possible that large archives will be split across two or more tapes. The mounted tape will be filled up if at least 25% of the total archive can be fit on to the remaining space. The remaining files will then be archived to a different tape. This behaviour is controlled by a set of registry variables in the registry.

Using the default values:

- Any archive greater than 2 GB or containing more than 2000 files will be split into multiple physical archives. This feature limits the maximum duration of an archive to reduce the amount of work that is lost if the device or server crashes. This feature also makes more effective use of the remaining space on tapes as they fill up.

- Because the maximum number of media per archives is 4, at least 25% of the total archive must fit on each tape used. If no tapes have at least this amount of space, the archive will fail and a request for new media to be introduced into the free pool will appear.
