When retrieving a job, "Waiting for medium to be enabled" appears even though the tape has been enabled

Product

  Prinergy 1.1

Platform

Intel

Operating system

Windows NT

Error

Symptoms

When retrieving a job from tape, you get the message in the process windows: "waiting for medium to be enabled" even though the tape is already enabled in Archiver Media Manager.

Cause

  Applying to Prinergy 1.1 only:

1. The ENABLED registry settings for this tape have been set to 0 somehow. i.e. disabled.

Or

2. If the tape has been deallocated, then when trying to retrieve, it will wait for medium to be enabled.

Or

3. If the tape has been deallocated and the application pool is checked to return deallocate media to free, then the tape will overwrite with new media header.

Solution

For cause 1:

Locate the tape settings in the following three areas, and set the ENABLED value to 1:

- \\Hkey_local_machine\Software\Creo\Araxi\RSM\LogicalMedia

- \\Hkey_local_machine\Software\Creo\Araxi\RSM\Partitions

- \\Hkey_local_machine\Software\Creo\Araxi\RSM\PhysicalMedia

For cause 2, if the tape is deallocated in Prinergy 1.1, we can confirm that by of value the registry key for the tape.

1. Go to a DOS prompt, start Regedit, select \\hkey_local_machine\Software\Creo\Araxi\RSM\LogicalMedia.

2. Locate the medium, look for archivemedmid in the registry. If this key is missing, the tape has been deallocated but not yet dragged to free pool.

3. To get the missing values back to the registry, please refer to another procedure "How do I recover deallocate tape" on Archiver FAQ.

For cause 3, you can use Rawtape to scan the tape to see whether the tape contains the valid medium header. If there is no valid medium header, we have to send the tape to data recovery lab to recover. Please refer to another procedure "If a tape is overwritten, where can I send it for data recovery?" on Archiver FAQ.

To list the job in the database, please refer to another workaround "How do I determine what all the archived jobs on a tape are?" on Archiver FAQ.

Check whether the job has been archived onto a different tape.

If not, we can send the tape to recovery lab to recover.

NOTE : For Prinergy 2.0, if the tape is disabled, the task will wait for the medium to be enabled. You can enable the tape in RSM and the task will resume.

Permanent fix: Prinergy 2.0
