How do I recover a deallocated Prinergy tape?

Product

  Prinergy 1.1; Prinergy Connect 2.0

Platform

Intel

Operating system

Windows NT/Windows 2000 Server

Error

The customer accidentally deallocated the Prinergy tape and now no jobs on the tape can be retrieved.

Symptoms

For Prinergy 1.1,

when trying to retrieve a job, it waiting for medium to be enabled, but the medium has been enabled both in registry or in Archiver Media Manager. Refer to another procedure, "When retrieving a job, "Waiting for medium to be enabled" appears even though the tape has been enabled" for details.

For Prinergy 2.0,

when trying to retrieve a job, it fails with the medium is missing, but the tape still in RSM.

Cause

Solution

Limitation: If the existing application pool is checked to return deallocate media to the free pool, once the tape is deallocated, then it will move to the free pool and write a new free label on it. In this case, the tape will be overwritten with a new free label, and the customer needs to send the tape to a data recovery lab to recover the tape. Please see the workaround "If a tape is overwritten, where can I send it for data recovery?" under the "archiver FAQs" keyword.

If the tape has been deallocated and is still inside the application pool without a new header written on it, you can recover the tape to use again.

NOTE : For Prinergy 1.1,

Back up the \\Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Creo\Araxi\RSM and \\Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Creo\Arch PVR 0 keys just in case we need.

For Prinergy 1.1 and 2.0,

1. Take the deallocated tape offline and delete the tape from Archiver Media Manager (Prinergy 1.1) or RSM (Prinergy 2.0).

2. Re-introduce the deallocated tape into the tape device.

3. Once the tape has been identified, it will show up inside the Import Pool.

4. Drag the tape from the Import Pool to the Application Pool.

5. Stop and Restart PArch JTP. The tape will show up as "Idle, Allocated".
