After Prinergy 1.1 to 2.0 upgrade, a blank new tape appears in the archiver's Unrecognized pool

Product

Platform

Operating system

Server: Windows NT or 2000; Client: Windows or Macintosh

Error

Symptoms

A blank new tape appears in the Unrecognized pool.

When a Prinergy system is upgraded from 1.1 to 2.0, some Prinergy tapes appear in the Unrecognized pool.

Cause

  A. When using a Windows 2000 system with Microsoft Removable Storage Manager (RSM), a blank new tape will appear in the Unrecognized pool. The tape must be dragged from the Unrecognized pool to the Free pool in order to write a free label to use it.

When using a Windows NT4 system with Creo Emulated RSM, a blank new tape will appear in the Free pool and will be ready for use.

B. The tape was written on a higher capacity drive and the existing drive cannot identify the media.

C. If all tapes are unrecognized by the drive, something is wrong with the drive. Possibly the tape leader is not installed properly.

Solution

A. A blank new tape will show up in different pools depending on whether a Windows 2000 or a Windows NT4 system is being used. When upgrading from Prinergy 1.1 to 2.0 (that is, from Windows NT4 to W2K), any unarchived or blank new tape (without a free label) will appear in the Unrecognized pool.

To confirm that the tape is usable:

1. Use Archiver Medium Capacity Report to determine whether the tape has been used.

2. Use Archiver Medium Contents Report to determine whether any job has been written on the tape.

3. Click on the Properties of the tape, and select the side tab to see the description. If it is a Prinergy tape, this will be mentioned in the side tab.

4. Run Rawtape on the tape to read the medium header.

B. If this blank new tape is a valid, usable tape, use a higher capacity drive to read it.

C. The drive must be fixed.

NOTE:

Unrecognized media pools contain blank (new) media and media that Removable Storage does not recognize. Unrecognized media are automatically deleted from the Removable Storage database when they are ejected from a library.
