Error |
In the RSM work queue, there is a "mount failed" error: "The device has indicated that cleaning is required before any further operations will attempt." |
Symptoms |
When trying to archive or retrieve a job in Prinergy, the tape library waits a very long time for a tape to be mounted. For a tape library such as a Faststor that does not handle automatic cleaning, there may be a "mount fails" message indicating that the drive requires cleaning, or a task in the operator requests advising you to clean the drive. Also, a CT signal may appear on the LCD panel of the Faststor tape library. For a tape library such as an ATL or Qualstar that handles automatic cleaner management and the cleaning tape is outside, the messenger service will display a message prompting you to load the cleaning tape. All other tasks will wait for this to be done and sit in the work queue. |

Cause |
The drive requires cleaning, causing RSM to submit a task to clean the drive in the work queue before mounting any tape in the drive. In general, failure of the calibration routine of a tape for any reason will cause the cleaning light to turn on. For example, if a tape contains a bad block, once the drive reads the bad block, it will trigger the cleaning light. |

Solution |
If it is necessary to clean the drive, see the related troubleshooting item "Prinergy Archiver cleaning light is on". If a tape containing a bad block has triggered the cleaning light, it is not recommended that you clean the drive. Instead, find out which tape contains the bad block and discontinue using the tape. If the tape library is using a DLT8000 drive, call the Creo Response Center to download the latest drive firmware to handle this false cleaning task. To bypass the cleaning task: For ATL and QUALSTAR tape libraries: If you have used Cleaner Management to add a cleaning cartridge in the tape library, the clean drive task will submit automatically once the tape is dismounted. You cannot bypass the cleaning task. NOTE: If there are many tapes with bad blocks, it is recommended that you remove the cleaning cartridge from the library to avoid cleaning the drive too much and wearing down the head. 1) Go to the physical library and click Drives. 2) Select the drive that requires cleaning and click Mark as Clean. If this does not cancel or complete the task in Operator Requests or the work queue, continue with the following steps. 3) Go to Operator Requests and highlight the submit task for inserting the cleaning tape. 4) Right-click the task and select Complete. 5) Go to the work queue, right-click the clean drive task, and select Cancel Request. 6) For an ADIC Faststor tape library, you can bypass cleaning the tape by powering off and on the library. NOTE: In some cases, if there are tasks already submitted after the drive cleaning, you need to cancel those tasks first in order to cancel the 'clean' task. That is, you may want to abort the Archiver task in order to cancel the mount and then the clean task. If the cleaning task keeps submitting back to the work queue, you may want to power the library off and then on again to get rid of the cleaning request. Permanent fix: |
