Symptoms |
When trying to install a medium changer driver for tape library, the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard failed to install with error "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified." There was an exclamation mark showed besides the medium changer, however, the tape library was still functioning. When you right click on the properties of the medium changer, it showed "the drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28). To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." If you click on the Driver tab, it showed "unknown driver" for this device. However, when you reinstall the driver, you got the same error from the upgrade driver wizard. |

Solution |
We have seen this problem happened at two sites and it seems that somehow the windows driver installer was corrupted and could not allow the system to update any driver. We need to rehost the system, i.e. reinstall Windows to resolve this problem. However, before you want to do that, check the followings: 1. Is the tape device functioning ok by itself? Try the tape device on a different server. 2. Are you running the correct tape or medium changer driver for the device? Try to uninstall the driver and reinstall again. 3. Disable the ASPI32 device manager driver, you have to go to Device Manager, select view to show hidden driver, under plug and play drivers, disable the aspi32.sys driver. Permanent fix: |
