Archiver allocates more tape to use than it needs

Error

Symptoms

When you try to archive using a 2 or more tape drives library and the drives are all idle and there are lots of freespace in the free pool, the archive will allocate more than one tape to archive than it needs. When submitting multiple jobs to archive, it will archive to 2-4 tapes if you configure to archive to 2 pools. Very inefficient, in between there are many dismouting and remounting tape.

For e.g. if you have a 4 tape drives library, it will allocate 3 tapes in each pool, and then randomly using those 6 tapes to archive on two pools, see table below.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th

Pool A 19 7 19 60 60 60

Pool B 40 14 23 23 14 40

Cause

Archiver will allocate more than one tape to the pool, when the drive is idle and there is free tape to allocate.

Solution

Disable the draw free tape from media pool on the archive media pool. Use Media Manager to check tape usage and add tape to the pool when it is necessary.
