(1.1) ERSM service crashed - Faststor tape library hangs

Product

  Prinergy 1.1

Platform

Intel

Operating system

Windows NT

Error

Symptoms

ERSM won't start up, the Faststor tape library hangs. The changer device hangs, the power button does not work, you have to unplug the power cable of the tape device to reset. If you restart the server without resetting the device, NT won't see the changer in the registry.

NOTE : We have not seen this behaviour with Pgy v2.0 under Windows 2000.

Cause

Solution

Whenever the FS22 is in a "hung" state - that is, front panel buttons are not responding, try to restart the ERSM service and Archive JTP without shutting down the entire Prinergy system:

1. Yank power cord from tape library

2. Plug power cord back in and wait for the library to get to the Ready state

3. Ensure Archive JTP is stopped (the state displayed in UADM should be stopped). If it isn't, and trying to stop it using UADM fails, kill the PArchRetJTP process using the Task Manager.

4. From Control Panel>Tape Devices, select the "Detect" button. Wait until it finishes scanning for the tape devices.

5. Now restart the ERSM service.

6. Now restart the Archive JTP.

If it still fails, then the only solution to bring the tape library and archiver back online will be to restart the entire server.

These steps worked everytime for the FS22. You may want to try if this works for the FS7 that is hanging at the customer site:

1. Unplug the power cable for the tape library, no need to restart the system.

2. However, if you restart the system without resetting the tape library first, then when NT starts up, it won't see the changer when it is hung.

In that case, after the power has been cycled, it would also be necessary to either:

1.Start & stop Disk Administrator (Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>Disk Administrator). This is a sneaky trick I learned about NT, that is, a partial plug-&-play capability of NT 4.

2. The CreoERSMService would then need to be manually started from the Control-Panel, or, restart Windows.

Permanent fix: Prinergy 2.0
