Symptoms

1.) Tapes may show up in media pools in RSM with a blank name.

2.) The customer may be prompted to insert a tape without a name.

3.) An archive operation may log completion without indicating the name of the tape to which it has archived (actually, it does log the name as a single blank but looks as though there is no name).

Cause

RSM dynamically updates the names and barcode values of a tape whenever it reads a new barcode value from the tape. In keeping with this scheme, when Archiver uses a tape that has been assigned a new name by the RSM, the archiver updates its database.

In most cases, this is a good thing. If a customer decided to update the barcode labeling scheme that they are using, for example, they will not need to update all tape names manually. When a barcode read error occurs, however, the library returns a blank barcode value that RSM updates the value of the tape with.

Solution

This is a non-optimal behaviour for RSM and will change in Windows XP or a future Windows 2000 service pack. A fix has been merged into Prinergy 2.0.7 to correct blank tape names reported by RSM, reverting them to the last reasonable value stored in the Prinergy database. Add additional check for medium name on medium thread completion.

This fix should minimize the appearance of blank tape names in archive and freespace reports as well as in the Prinergy UI.

However, the customer may still experience the problem in other applications such as Microsoft Backup until the behavior of the RSM is changed.
