Background outside mediabox is lost during refining

Product

  Prinergy Connect 2.1

Platform

Operating system

Error

n.a.

Symptoms

When a file is distilled (Distiller 5.x) or normalised (Prinergy 2.1.x), and there is a background outside of the "Mediabox", this background will be cut to the size of the "Mediabox". If, for some reason, the mediabox has to be expanded after refining (for bleed etc.), there will be no backgound or image in the additional "Media Box" space.

Cause

There is change of behavior between the normaliser in 2.0.x (or Distiller 4.x) and the normaliser in 2.1 (or Distiller 5). The behavioral change was introduced by Adobe.

Solution

If the default page size is larger than a certain set size, the background will not be cut.

If the page is normalised with a larger default pagesize (Distiller Job setting), tha background is not trimmed.

We can than use the geometry editor to set the mediabox, and trimbox to the right specifications.

You can also automate this with Pitstop profiles in either Pitstop Server or Synapse Prepare.

I included a .sit file with the right profiles, directives, etc... for Prepare.

Inside the .sit file are the following files:

Directive: "Box Buster" to copied in the directives folder for prepare.

Job Option file: "Increase Pagesize" to be copied in the Distiller Job Option Files folder for Prepare

Pitstop action: "Resize Media Box" to be copied in the Pitstop Actions folder for Prepare

Pitstop action: "Change Page Box Layout" to be copied in the Pitstop Actions folder for Prepare

Make sure you check the directive and make sure the pitstop actions are executed in the order above.

The following will happen to the file when the directive "Box Buster" is chosen:

- PS file comes into the hotfolder and will be distilled with the Job Option "Increase Pagesize". This will enforce a default page size of 1000 x 1000 points (above the threshold mentioned above). The background image will not be cut.

- Prepare will then use a Pitstop action to bring the mediabox back to the standard (612x792).

- Another Pitstop action will add the bleed, but makes sure the trimbox will stay at the same position.

- The result will be a PDF file, with the right dimension, trimbox and with the background object still in the bleed space.

Depending on the need or the original files, settings might be different.
