Symptoms |
During rendering, input files originating from Indesign 2.0.1 may cause wrong characters and replace some text with squares |

Cause |
The InDesign-generated PDF contains two embedded subset fonts, both with the same subset FontName. The problem may originate with the InDesign 2.0.1 font environment. The font embedded in the pdf file is a MacOS TrueType version of Helvetica that comes installed by default. Allegedly, it has the same metrics as the Adobe Type 1 version of Helvetica. It is most troublesome when both the TrueType and Type 1 versions of Helvetica, sharing the same font name, but not the same file name, are both installed. |

Solution |
It is possible to set the embedding threshold to 0% when exporting PDF from InDesign, which results in no subsetting, so the entire font is embedded. (Note that Prinergy 2.2.1.5 has some fixes to correct some of these issues.) If the entire font is embedded, the missing glyph problem is no longer an issue. The file-size penalty of embedding the entire font is probably not a big issue for your customer. Be careful, because embedding all fonts may cause other problems. Permanent fix: |
